PERI relieves fears of security breaches at Smart Grid Technology Conference

Stephen Keehn, SDGE talks to PERI's
Peter Wiersma,
 V.P. Business Development
at Smart Grid
Technology Update Conference in San Diego

Newark, NJ “Utilities have discovered that smart grid will change every aspect of their business – from customer care to service delivery and infrastructure management,” said PERI Software president & CEO Sarav Periasamy is attending te 2010 Smart Grid Conference Update.  The conference focuses on giving vendors and utility executives the knowledge for creating a sustainable energy future.  “But more importantly we need to educate and engage consumers in the transformation.  By doing so customers worry less about rate hikes and feel more comfortable in saving energy and the environment.”

PERI Software, a business solutions company based in Newark, NJ, a conference sponsor, offers a solution that consists of smart electric meters that are capable of collecting fine grained household electrical usage data and transmitting the data securely over mobile phones using general packet radio service (GPRS) or WIFI Mesh. GPRS concentrators are used to avoid the repetitive and cost intensive maintenance for each meter.

“Technology that allows integration of Home Area
Networks to the Smart Grid technology has added security concerns that have to
be addressed” said Chief Technology Officer Satish Chetty, PERI Software

The emerging technology that allows the integration of Home Area Network to the
Smart Grid has added security concerns that have to be addressed especially with data, multi-application integration and
communication networks,” said Chief Technology Officer Satish Chetty, PERI Software Solutions, Inc.,  of the nation’s fastest growing Asian-owned, global business solutions companies, one based in Newark, NJ with offices in San Jose, Los Angeles and Chennai, India.

Chetty spoke about application security for Smart Grid technology at 2010 Smart Grid Technology Conference & Expo, hosted by San Diego Gas & Electric, June 2 -3, 2010, San Diego, CA.
The Smart Grid conference revealed ways to step up smart grid technologies. PERI display its latest Smart Grid technology among a dozen exhibitors and sponsors. “Research shows that 60 percent of the electricity generated in this country is lost to inefficiencies, and the fact that smart grid technology is green and does not cost more, should help customers feel good about saving energy and the environment,” said Sarav Periasamy, President and CEO, PERI Software Solutions, Inc. "Smart Grid technology transforms the way utilities can deliver power to customers.”
Smart Grid and Smart Metering introduce access control, network and application security concerns at and beyond the meter. PERI outline ways on how to prepare a security policy, understand and prevent network security issues and respond to incidents. Attendees also heard PERI talk about the role based access control of data, devices, networks and applications, along with audits and reinforcements.
The two-day Smart Grid technology conference, sponsored by San Diego Gas and Electric Company,  also featured industry leaders from Austin Energy, TVA, Google, Seattle City Light, Southern California Edison, Better Place, Sempra, EPRI, and Verizon Wireless to name a few.                      Daniel J. Zaragoz, Dir., Electric Dist. Ops. SDGE, Sempra Energy utility talks about smart grid technology. PERI Software Solutions Inc. a sponsor discussed security concerns and displayed its new technology and smart meters at the San Diego Conference.       Other subjects discussed included future of smart grid cleantech industry, which is estimated to hit $11.8 billion by the end of 2015. The conference will also feature “the pros and cons of in-home wireless standards such as open source and ZigBee, to see which home area networks will allow efficient home automation.  omas Larsen, Product Mgr. PALLADIUM Energy, which makes batteries for industrial and consumers like for the iPod talks about the new direction his company is looking at in tapping into the smart grid technology.   The two day event also outlined topics like “how to manage in-home data from multiple sources such as consumer devices, electric vehicles and smart meters to streamline operations.” And attendees got the low down on the latest open platform based utility-technology partnerships to hear who they need to connect with for future gains.
PERI offers a solution that consists of smart electric meters that are capable of collecting fine grained household electrical usage data and transmitting it over secure communications protocols like mobile phones using general packet radio service (GPRS) or WIFI Mesh.
“The data collected is integrated into a smart grid enterprise information system,” explained Periasamy. “The application supports data collection, analytics, system planning, engineering, operations, energy management, asset management, and value-added customer services. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Smart Meter and Demand Response form the core enabling technologies for the smart grid.

It offers improved revenue management and proactive customer communications about energy efficiency. Through dynamic rate price programs and Home Area Network applications and devices the smart grid also enables customers to manager the user of energy in their home in near real time.  Above (L-R) CTO Satish Chetty with PERI's Peter Wiersma at display table of smart meters at the Smart Grid Technology Update Conference in San Diego.
